Dunhuang Gold Buddha Sancai Gaiwan — Intangible Heritage Gilding Craft

The Dunhuang Gold Buddha Sancai Gaiwan is a living piece of China’s intangible cultural heritage — hand-crafted using the traditional gilding technique (鈥金工艺) passed down through generations. Fired at 1380°C, the gold finish bonds permanently to the porcelain body and will not peel, fade, or wear away with use. The exterior is adorned with richly coloured Dunhuang-inspired motifs — golden Buddhas in lotus posture, sacred clouds, stupas, and Eight Treasures (八宝) — rendered in polychrome enamel against a deep black ground. The interior is glazed in luminous white with a cinnabar red (朱砂红) well, and the saucer bears a gold-script maker’s mark at its centre. A complete three-piece Sancai set: lid, bowl, and saucer — each surface a meditation in itself.
